About Planet Bites

Planet Bites · Real recipes from a home cook — the site lives at foodmlover.com. It is my personal cooking journal: no ghostwriters, no “team,” no fake perfection. I’m Lao Zhao, the person behind the brand, a home cook who has burned more garlic, broken more tofu, and served more salty soups than I’d like to admit. Planet Bites exists because I kept searching for recipes that told me what could go wrong, not just what looks good on a plate.

Why I started this site

For years, I followed glossy recipes that promised “ultimate comfort” but left me with rubbery shrimp or bitter sauces. I realized that most cooking sites hide the failures. Here, I don’t. Every dish you see is something I’ve made at least twice — often three or four times — until I understood why it works (or doesn’t).

This is not an encyclopedia of Chinese cuisine. It’s my working notebook: real ingredients, real stovetop struggles, and real substitutions for when you don’t have authentic shaoxing wine or a clay pot.

What you’ll find here

  • Detailed dish pages with ingredients, step‑by‑step instructions, and the kind of tips I’d text a friend (“don’t skip the egg white marinade” or “this is where I used to overcook it”).
  • Browse by cuisine, region, flavor, and cooking method — the same tags I use to keep my own experiments organized.
  • A weekly email (via Buttondown) with one new dish and one honest mistake — no spam, no fluff.

What this site is not

  • Not medical or nutritional advice — please consult a professional for allergies or health conditions.
  • Not a guarantee — your stove, pan, and ingredients will differ. I can only tell you what worked in my kitchen.
  • Not a corporate content farm — there’s no “test kitchen team” or stock‑photo models. Just me, Lao Zhao, and my phone camera.

My editorial promise

I cook and write everything myself. If I’m unsure about a historical claim, I say so. If I found a shortcut that actually works (like using canned peas for noodle toppings), I share it. My goal is useful, repeatable home cooking — not Instagram‑worthy plating on the first try.

I update the site at least twice a week, and I’m always adding new dishes from regions I’m still learning (Anhui, Fujian, Yunnan…). When I fail, I’ll tell you. When I succeed, I’ll tell you that too.

Thanks for visiting Planet Bites. Now go cook something — and don’t worry if it doesn’t turn out perfect the first time. That’s exactly how I started.
